The alleged private marriage between his father, the 13th Lord (Baron) and 4th Earl Berkeley with Mary, daughter of William Cole, publican and butcher, on 30 Mar 1875, was not recognised; for this reason, neither his elder brother nor himself inherited their fathers titles. On 16th May 1796 the couple (re)married.
