21 June 1853 Lieutenant in Tribune, commanded by Swynfen Thomas Carnegie, Channel squadron, then the Baltic and then the Black Sea during the Russian War. Whilst in the Baltic, Smithett had command of the prize crew of the Russian Finland bark Phoenix, captured off Gothland on 12 April 1854, returning to the Nore the next month.
