1 August 1889Admiral the Hon. Thomas Baillie, of Dryburgh Abbey, died yesterday morning at Kelso. The deceased, who was a son of the late Hon. George Baillie, of Jerviswood, joined the naval service under Captain, afterwards Sir Thomas, Fellowes, Commander of her Majesty's ship Dartmouth, shortly before the battle of Navarino, in which he took part, being then a lad of 16 years, and for which he received the Navarino medal. During the Crimean war the admiral commanded the British fleet in the White Sea, and successfully blockaded the Russian fleet. He was an uncle of the present Earl of Haddington and of Lord Polwarth.
