In old age William Loney sent his album of Emerald photos (together with the portrait) to his niece Annie to prevent it "falling into strange hands". In this enclosure he briefly gives the “present whereabouts” of the officers as gleaned from “a late Navy List”, and this allows an estimate of the date of sending to be made: the reference to Lord Walter Kerr being a Vice Admiral and Second Naval Lord seems to date the document to the period 20 February to 26 May 1895.
