19 October 1896Admiral C.L.D. Waddilove died at his residence, Beacon-grange, Hexham, on Saturday morning. He was born in 1828 at Thorp, near Ripon, his father being the Rev. W.J.W. Waddilove, and his mother Elizabeth Ann, daughter of Sir James Graham, of Netherby. He joined the Navy in 1842 as a midshipman on the Minden, and subsequéntly was flag-lieutenant for some time with Sir Edward Martin at Portsmonth. He commanded the Swallow in the Mediterranean during the time of the Crimean War. He was appointed captain on April 15, 1862; rear-admiral, December 31, 1877; vice-admiral, April 1, 1884; and admiral, May 1, 1888. Alter being in command of the Swallow he was post-captain at Kingstown, and on the formation of the Flying Squadron was appointed to the Inconstant. Subsequently he commanded the Black Prince at Greenock, and then the steam reserve at Portsmouth. He obtained flag rank in 1877, and from 1878 to 1879 was second-in-command of the Channel Squadron, flying his flag on the Agincourt. In May, 1887, he succeeded Prince Leiningen as Commander-in-Chief at the Nore. He vacated his appointment in May, 1888, on promotion to the rank of admiral, and quitted the service in May, 1893, under the age clause. In 1869 he married Mary Elizabeth, eldest daughter of the Rev. J. Alexander Blackett-Ord, of Whitfield-hall, who died in 1888. He is survived by four daughters and three sons.
