23 January 1890Admiral Edward H. Howard died on the 18th inst, at Lewisham at the age of 57. Born in June, 1832, he entered the Navy in June, 1845, received his sub-lieutenant’s commission in June, 1851, and that of lieutenant in January, 1853, and with that rank served in the Baltic during the Russian War in 1855, being present at the bombardment of Sveaborg, and subsequently receiving the Baltic medal. He reached the rank of commander in May, 1857, and that of captain in February, 1864, and was Naval Attaché for Europe from September, 1874, till March, 1877, and aide-de-camp to the Queen from January 14, 1878, till November 25, 1879, when he was promoted to the rank of rear-admiral. From 1881 till July, 1884, he was vice-president of the Ordnance Committee, and in November, 1885, was promoted to be a vice-admiral.
