8 July 1893Admiral Henry Bouchier Phillimore, C.B., who died on the 3rd inst., at his residence, Stoneleigh, Lansdown-road, Bath, was born on October 25, 1833, and was a son of Captain Sir John Phillimore, R.N., C.B. (who died in 1840, and who had distinguished himself at the battles of Cape St. Vincent and Copenhagen, at the second attack on Copenhagen, in 1807, and in the gallant action of the Eurotas, 38, which he commanded, with the Clorinde, 44), by a daughter of Rear-Admiral Jeffery, Baron von Raigersfeld, a British officer of German descent. Mr. Phillimore entered the Navy in 1846, and became a mate in 1852, when he joined the Excellent. In 1854 he was made lieutenant and appointed to the Malacca, 17, which proceeded on particular service in connexion with the operations in the Crimea, and subsequently remained in the Mediterranean. Later he joined the Ganges, 84, flagship in the Pacific, and then became first lieutenant of the Warrior, of which, at the same time, the late Sir George Tryon was commander. In 1863, being himself promoted to be commander, he was appointed to the Curacoa, 23, commodore's ship in Australia, but before the end of the year was transferred to the command of the chartered steamer Avon, in which he won great credit at the two attacks on the Maori positions at Rangariri, and in the New Zealand operations of the early part of 1864. Indeed, his services were of so gallant a nature that they gained for him post-rank when he had been a commander for only 15 months. In 1867 he was made a C.B. Captain Phillimore became a rear-admiral in 1880, and a vice-admiral in 1887, retiring in 1888, and being promoted to the rank of admiral on tbc retired. List in 1892. The Admiral, who married a daughter of Mr. E.D. Bourdillon, was in 1889 chosen to be an alderman of the Huntingdonshire County Council.
