2 September 1878Death of Lord Lauderdale.— We have to announce the death of the Earl of Lauderdale, which occurred yesterday at Thirlsstane Castle, Berwickshire. The late peer was the only son of the late General the Hon. W. Mordaunt Maitland, and was bom at Frankfort, County Cork, in 1803. He entered the Navy at an early age, and during the Civil War of 1836-7 commanded Her Majest's ship Tweed on the coast of Spain, In recognition of the services he rendered at this time he received the Spanish Order of Charles III. Then he served on the coasts of India and China, and before long was knighted. In 1860 he was appointed to the command of the fleet in the Pacific, and in 1863, after succeeding to the Earldom, he became Vice-Admiral of the fleet. Five years afterwards he was promoted to the rank of Admiral. He was a Deputy-Lieutenant of Berwickshire, heritable standard-bearer of Scotland, and Marshal of the Royal Household there. In 1873, after having been made first and principal aide-de-camp to the Queen, he was placed on the retired list. He was married in 1828 to a daughter of the late Mr. W. Young, of Rio de Janeiro.
