ADMIRAL THE HON. SIR JAMES DRUMMOND.

Admiral the Hon. Sir James Robert Drummond, G.C.B., Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, died at the Hook, Fareham, Hants, yesterday morning, after a short but severe illness, at the age of 83. He was the second son of the 8th Viscount Strathallan, by Lady Amelia Sophia Murray, daughter of John, 4th Duke of Athole. He entered the Navy in 1826, became captain in 1846, commanded the Retribution at the reconnoitre of Sebastopol Harbour, and took part in the bombardment of Odessa and the attack on Fort Constantine, Sebastopol, 1854. He joined in the expedition to Kertch and the reduction of Kinburn and also in the operations of 1855, being mentioned in despatches. He received the Crimean and Turkish medals and the Sebastopol clasp, was made an officer of the Legion of Honour, and was given the Second Class Medjidieh. He was commodore of Woolwich Dockyard from 1859 to 1861, superintendent of Devonport Dockyard from 1866 to 1870, and commander-in-chief of the Mediterranean Squadron from January, 1874, to January, 1877. He became C.B. in 1855 and K.C.B. in 1873, was raised to the First Class Medjidieh in 1878, and became G.C.B. in 1880. He was A.D.C. to the Queen from 1857 to 1864, and a Lord of the Admiralty from February to December, 1858, and again from March, 1861, to April, 1866. He was appointed Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in July, 1883. He married in 1856 Catherine, third daughter of the late Admiral the Hon. Sir George Elliot, K.C.B.
