8 October 1891 Admiral the Hon. George Grey, who died on the 3d inst., at Eaglescarnie, was fourth son of Charles, second Earl GreyExternal link, the distinguished Whig statesman, by Mary Elizabeth, only daughter of Lord Ponsonby, and was born on May 16, 1809. He entered the Royal Navy in 1822, and was a midshipman in the Talbot, 28, at the battle of Navarino in 1827. In the following year he passed his examination, and, in 1829, was promoted to be lieutenant, and appointed to the Windsor Castle, 76, in the Mediterranean, where he served off the coast of Greece, and witnessed the events which occurred there prior to the establishment on the throne of King Otho. On September 3, 1831, he was promoted to be commander, and as such, commanded in succession the 18-gun sloops Scylla and Scout. In 1834 he was raised to post rank, and in 1835 was appointed to the Cleopatra, 26, in which, after convoying the Countess of Durham and suite to St. Petersburg, he went to South America, and, returning, carried the Marquis of Clanricarde as Ambassador to Russia. He paid off the Cleopatra in 1838, and remained on half-pay until 1841, when he obtained command of the Belvidera, 38, in the Mediterranean. In 1846 he was made captain of the port of Gibraltar, and, a few weeks later, officer in charge of the naval stores belonging to the dockyard there. He held this post for nearly ten years, and was then, on November 12, 1856, promoted to be rear-admiral. Two years later he hoisted his flag in the St. Vincent, 102, as Admiral Superintendent at Portsmouth, removing later to the Illustrious, 72, and finally to the Asia, 84. In 1863 he reached the rank of vice-admiral, and in 1867 that of admiral. From 1866 Admiral Grey was in receipt of a flag officer's Greenwich Hospital pension of £150 a year. This now falls vacant. He married, in 1845, Jane Frances, second daughter of Lieutenant-General the Hon. Sir Patrick Stuart, Governor of Malta.
