This portrait and photograph show William Loney RN, born on 2 July 1817 in Ireland and died 27 July 1898.
He was a surgeon in the British navy between 1839 (when he took up his commission as Assistant Surgeon in Wanderer) and 1877 (when he retired with the rank of
Inspector General of Hospitals and Fleets). He was the granduncle of my stepfather.
This part of the website describes his career and documents his life as illustrated by his original documents and photos, extracts from ships' and medical logs, maps and other documents.
